Sunburn Kona

In the year 1835, a French chemist named Michel E. Chevreul was asked by the Gobelin Tapestry factory in France to try and discover why the dyes they used for their tapestries were lacking in color. After working on the problem, he discovered that the dyes were not at fault; rather, the fault lay in the placement of the colors. He said that if certain colors were placed beside each other, the colors would become duller or their vibrancy would be enhanced, depending on which colors they were placed beside.

Winslow Homer called Chevreul’s book “his bible.” That is how much difference Chevreul’s theories made to Homer’s paintings.

My Mother’s Garden Victoria, BC, Canada

This painting illustrates the principle in Chevreul’s book. The blue ocean makes the orange poppies a more vibrant orange and the blue ocean a more intense blue.
