Nests

I love Nests. I am working on a series of paintings of birds’ nests. In the crow’s nest pictured here, the stalks, stems, grass, twigs, mud, and whatever else the crow has used are combined together to form what appears to be a haphazard mixture of vegetation and organic matter, but it is not haphazard; instead, it is a unique, extraordinary, instinctive execution of a secure dwelling place for the crow’s babies.

The nest provides me with inspiration, because it inspires mark-making at its best. It motivates freedom in drawing. There isn’t any way to do it right. One can simply draw, and as with the crow, gradually the form will take shape.
